Researchers say larger vehicles are riskier to pedestrians

On Behalf of | Apr 11, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Being a pedestrian in New York City can be scary. With the number of vehicles on the road, the reckless way in which people drive and the inherent hustle and bustle, auto accidents are common. For pedestrians, the risk of injury and death is enhanced because they do not have the protection of a person who is driving or riding in a vehicle. Recently, a study analyzed pedestrian accidents and found that certain types of vehicles are more dangerous to pedestrians than others. This is just one aspect of a pedestrian accident people should be aware of to avoid them and to understand their options after a collision.

IIHS study

In a recently released report, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that SUVs, pickups and similar vehicles have a statistically greater likelihood to crash into pedestrians while turning. Their structure is believed to make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians as they turn. Blind spots are a prominent problem. Also, since these vehicles are heavier than smaller passenger vehicles, the injuries people suffer when they are hit can be worse. This report comes out while pedestrians are at increased risk on the nation’s roads. Part of that is believed to be because of drivers who are distracted, drive beyond the speed limit, are drowsy or under the influence.

The most recent numbers for pedestrian fatalities from 2020 show that more than 6,500 lost their lives in the United States. That is a rise of nearly 60% from a decade earlier. It is a 4% spike from 2019. The analysis of the vehicles that are hitting pedestrians adds a new wrinkle. There are more SUVs and pickups on the road than in the past. Larger vehicles came to nearly half of new auto purchases in 2009. By 2021, they accounted for more than 75%. Left turns are especially dangerous to pedestrians with SUVs and pickups.

Long-term problems

Many New York pedestrians have stories about “near misses” and almost being hit by a vehicle. Unfortunately, some are unable to keep from being involved in motor vehicle accidents, suffer catastrophic injuries and lose their lives. With the broken bones, brain injuries, spinal cord damage and other injuries that can happen, their prospects can be changed and they can face massive medical bills. Families who have lost a loved one will be confronted with the personal challenges that come with a fatal pedestrian crash. To be fully protected and know what steps are available, having assistance is crucial. Consulting with those experienced in all areas of pedestrian accidents can provide guidance and advice.
